Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS): Foundation of SIFA’s Curriculum

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) form the foundation of SIFA Learning Academy Charter School’s STEAM curriculum. This nationally recognized framework prepares students for college, careers, and real-world problem-solving by focusing on both scientific knowledge and the development of critical thinking and investigative skills.

NGSS is based on a three-dimensional learning model that integrates:

• 1.Science and Engineering Practices, which engage students in hands-on inquiry, experimentation, design, and problem-solving;
• 2.Crosscutting Concepts, which help students identify patterns, cause-and-effect relationships, systems, and structures across scientific disciplines; and
• 3.Disciplinary Core Ideas, which focus on essential scientific principles in life science, physical science, earth and space science, and engineering.

At SIFA, NGSS serves as a schoolwide instructional foundation that drives interdisciplinary learning. Science instruction is integrated with technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics to support the STEAM model. Students design, build, test, revise, and present solutions to real-world problems, reflecting authentic scientific and engineering processes.

NGSS aligns with SIFA’s phenomena-based and inquiry-driven approach. Lessons center on meaningful questions and real-life challenges, encouraging critical thinking, effective collaboration, and clear communication. This approach promotes deeper conceptual understanding and ensures learning is transferable beyond the classroom.

NGSS supports the use of digital tools, simulations, robotics, data visualization, and creative media in instruction. Students document their learning through presentations, videos, engineering notebooks, and digital portfolios, strengthening scientific literacy and 21st-century communication skills.
